THEME: Prioritising Gender equality & Sustainability as Pathways to addressing Global Challenges across STEM fields

BACKGROUND

The Centre for Economic and Leadership Development in collaboration with the Amazons Watch Magazine is pleased to organize its maiden edition of the Global Women in STEM Symposium (GWISS) 2023 to be held on March 29, 2023 (London GMT+1) via Zoom, in commemoration of the 2023 International Women’s Day celebrations.

SWWCS 2023, under the theme, “Prioritising Gender equality & Sustainability as Pathways to addressing Global Challenges across STEM fields,” aims to highlight the crucial role women in STEM play in addressing global sustainability challenges. This objective will be achieved by bringing together seasoned STEM women in academia and professional practice to share novel ideas, including their development of inventions, products, tools, and technological advances that provide better solutions to global sustainability challenges and how these impacts on addressing sustainability.

The purpose of utilising this approach is not just to project the impact of the contributions made by women but also to spark the interest of more young women in STEM fields, especially in the fields and ethnicities where they are grossly underrepresented such as in Engineering and BAME communities. Thereby, this could improve gender equality and sustainability practices in these fields to generate better solutions to global challenges.

The symposium will explore the impact of gender inequality in STEM fields, especially in the face of the current widening economic and social inequalities. Research shows that the prevalence of gender inequality in fields such as STEM cost the world economy $6 trillion in 2019, according to the OECD Social Institutions and Gender Index report. In addition, a UN Women report has reiterated the importance of “Gender equality and inclusion of all women and girls as not only an explicit goal under the 2030 Agenda” but also a key factor in achieving the different dimensions of sustainable development challenges, “from ending poverty and hunger, promoting prosperity and inclusive growth and building peaceful, just and inclusive societies to securing the protection of the planet and its natural resources”. This, therefore, underpins the argument that Gender diversity across all STEM fields is crucial for a sustainable future.

The SWWCS 2023 event will bring together women scientists, technologists, engineers, mathematicians who are researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, politicians and policymakers and gender equality activists to showcase the major breakthroughs in these fields, which they have developed to solve sustainability challenges, through interactive discussions, video presentations, plenary and keynote presentations.

This symposium will also:

  1. Discuss innovations on equitable community development and how international development and policy institutions could benefit the work of women in/for STEM
  2. Seek and create opportunities for future collaborations across public and private sectors to generate solutions-oriented and results-focused projects grounded in actionable research that will deliver maximum impact to society.
  3. Improve gender equality and sustainability practices in these fields to generate better solutions to global challenges.
  4. Spark the interest of more young girls and women to embrace STEM fields, especially those from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and underrepresented communities.

REGISTER NOW to be a part of a platform were women who change the world through their novel creations, come together to showcase diverse solutions to the world’s greatest problems for the benefit of both current and future generations as well as inspire young women and girls to take advantage of the opportunities to thrive and make an impact through STEM careers.
