ROUNDTABLE ON EDUCATION & GENDER EQUALITY HELSINKI, FINLAND
The Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD), an organization in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) is organizing a Roundtable on Education and Gender Equality, Helsinki- Finland, a 3 day program, billed to hold at the Hilton Helsinki Strand, John Stenberg in Ranta 4, Helsinki 00530 on the 21st-25th of November in the capital city of Helsinki, Finland.
The Scope of the Roundtable is outlined as follows:
We are particularly excited about our choice of Finland for this year’s event, as Finland is a pioneer in education and gender equality, and the first country in the world to give women both the right to vote and stand for election as early as 1906. We also understand that global empowerment of women and girls do not happen overnight; it requires persistence and a multilateral commitment to realize change on a global scale. ROUNDTABLE ON EDUCATION & GENDER EQUALITY is expected to offer participants the opportunity to learn, share experiences and through a well-structured atmosphere generate lively discussions on education and gender in Africa.
A new Gender Report compiled by UNESCO’s EFA Global Monitoring Report (GMR) for International Day of the Girl Child, shows that fewer than half of countries – of which none in sub-Saharan Africa – have achieved the goal of gender parity in both primary and secondary education, even though all were supposed to achieve it by 2005. The World Bank Group however takes as its starting point that no country, community or economy can achieve its potential or meet the challenges of the 21st century without the full and equal engagement of women and men, girls and boys.
